Nic ~ I Forgot!

17 11 2009

I’m not entirely sure, but I think I may have forgotten how to read.¬† Illiteracy is rearing it’s ugly head.¬† Sometimes life just takes so much work, and you don’t get to do all the things you really love!¬† That being said, I have been doing some other things that I DO love, thank goodness (check them out on my other blog).¬† I’ve been learning about my camera and taking classes on it, and I’ve been learning how to make fancy iced cookies and I’ve been working….alot.¬† Ok.¬† That last one is not one of my favourite things, but it still needs doing, sometimes, I guess…

All that being said, I am about to commit to some serious reading.¬† I miss it! My brain feels all mushy.¬† You know it’s bad when you look at something that contains more than 3 paragraphs and it makes you want to take a nap…so, time for a tune up, and then off to the races!¬† This week I am undergoing a surgery, and I have a MINIMUM of 6 weeks off work.¬† For the first few I will have limited mobility.¬† For some, this would spell certain insanity.¬† For me, it spells R-E-A-D.¬† Also, it spells a little bit of insanity.¬† But I will make lemonade, or something like that.

I have at the LEAST about 30 books that i have already purchased, and still not read.¬† I’m a little bit of a book monger.¬† I’m sure that I can do a book a week, if not more.¬† I have the new Niffenegger sitting and waiting all pretty, as well as some Dostoevsky that I have been promising to open.¬† Exciting.

Dear Books.

I’ve marked you down in PEN, literature.¬† Let’s you and I have a date…

ever yours, untill my sight goes.

Nicole

Banned Books

30 09 2009

While checking out my Google Reader for updated blogs, I came across a couple of mentions of the US’s¬†Banned Books Week – a celebration of the freedom to read. ¬†I am all for the freedom to read, and was interested to see what kinds of books have been banned or challenged at some point. ¬†The American Library Association had a list of 100 banned and/or challenged classics… so I wondered how many I have read and/or own??

1. The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald *Own it, haven’t read it yet
2. The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger **Read it
3. The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck Want to read it!
4. To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee **Read it
5. The Color Purple by Alice Walker Want to read it!
6. Ulysses by James Joyce
7. Beloved by Toni Morrison
